Although enduringly popular with British people as a holiday destination, Greece is often ignored by those looking to buy a home overseas, an expert has claimed.

Director of Property Abroad Les Calvert said that the Mediterranean country is "a lot cheaper than the likes of Spain" and should appeal to UK buyers due to its interesting history, famous culture and "beautiful countryside".

There is some interest from overseas buyers in Greek property, however, with major islands such as Crete, Corfu and Rhodes currently the most popular destinations, according to the firm.

Speaking about the appeal of Greece, Mr Calvert commented: "It is the kind of place where you really can escape from the realities of life if you want and get lost in its beauty.

"I think it has a long way to come as far as the overseas property market is concerned."

According to a report issued by the Association of International Property Professionals last year, Spain and France are the two most popular destinations for British people buying abroad.
